What the Sato Family Residence Well House Is
The Sato Family Residence Well House (佐藤家住宅井戸屋, Satō-ke Jūtaku Idoya) is a tiny roofed shelter over a well on a merchant family's estate on the Oshu Kaido highway in Ogawara Town, Miyagi Prefecture, built around 1939 and listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 28 June 2017. It measures 1.4 metres by 1.2 metres, covers 1.7 square metres and is roofed in steel sheet and tile.
The Sato Family Residence Well House stands southeast of the main house, just outside the inner wall. It is open on three sides, and in the middle sits a well with a timber curb.
Of the ten registered structures on the estate, the well house and the small Jingu shrine are by far the smallest. The Satoya Project includes the well house among its photographs of the estate, treating it, small as it is, as part of the scenery of the place.
Why It Was Listed
The Sato Family Residence Well House was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes its design in the manner of Sukiya-zukuri, the refined, rustic style associated with tea architecture, and says it lends charm to the grounds.
The sukiya character comes from the choice of timber. Posts and beams are left as round logs rather than sawn square, so the natural form of the wood shows. The result is the kind of restrained, light construction found in tea houses.
The west side carries lattice work that combines vertical bars with a diamond lattice. On a structure open on three sides, the one closed face is where the fine craftsmanship is concentrated.
What to Look For
Start with the lattice on the west side of the Sato Family Residence Well House, where the verticals of one grille cross the diagonals of the diamond pattern to make a regular design on a very small panel.
Then the log posts. Each differs in thickness and curve, and they stand at the corners of a plan just 1.4 metres by 1.2 metres. Take them together with the timber well curb at the centre and the whole reads as a small study in wood.
Notice, too, where it sits. The well house is outside the inner wall, so the place for drawing water lies on the line between the walled gardens and the rest of the grounds.
Visiting
The Sato Family Residence Well House stands inside the estate and cannot be seen from the street. It can be seen only when the house is opened for Satoya Project events (checked 25 September 2026).
No official statement on photography was found; ask at reception on an open day. It is a small and delicate structure, so avoid touching the lattice or the well curb.
