What the Sato Family Residence Shop Storehouse Is
The Sato Family Residence Shop Storehouse (佐藤家住宅店蔵, Satō-ke Jūtaku Tanagura) is the street-front business storehouse of a merchant family's estate on the Oshu Kaido highway in Ogawara Town, Miyagi Prefecture, built in 1886 and listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 28 June 2017. It is a 2-storey Dozo-zukuri building measuring 7.1 metres by 6.4 metres, with a gabled roof of Sangawara-buki pantiles partly replaced in copper, and it covers 45 square metres.
According to the Satoya Project, the Sato Family Residence Shop Storehouse is the oldest building on the estate. For the Satoya, which began in the kimono-cloth trade and took up soy sauce brewing in 1850, it was the face the business turned to the highway. It was restored in 2011.
The storehouse faces the highway on its west side and connects at the back to a corridor of the main house. A Meiji merchant's storehouse is thus joined by a single passage to the family home built around 1939.
Why It Was Listed
The Sato Family Residence Shop Storehouse was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs credits the finish of its walls and eaves with shaping the streetscape along the highway.
The walls are divided between smooth Shikkui lime plaster and Namako-kabe, the lattice of tiles and raised plaster joints that gives many Japanese storehouses their checkerboard skin. The same namako finish carries on around the eaves, so one technique runs from wall to roof edge. The fireproof shell of a storehouse has been turned directly into a shopfront.
There are windows in two places on the upper front and one on the north side, each closed by double doors of thick clay, the tsuchido, which merge with the wall when shut. Protection for stock and a public face for the shop share a single elevation on the street.
What to Look For
Stand across the highway and take in the west front of the Sato Family Residence Shop Storehouse squarely. Follow where the flat plaster gives way to the namako pattern, and how the finish on the eaves meets the wall, and it becomes clear why this building was valued as the anchor of the street view.
Look up at the upper windows as well. If the clay doors of the two front openings are open, you can judge their thickness.
The front gate opens beside the storehouse and the outer wall runs on from it. The storehouse of 1886 and the gate and wall of about 1939, half a century apart, make up one continuous frontage on the highway.
Visiting
Of all the buildings on the estate, the Sato Family Residence Shop Storehouse is the easiest to see. Because it faces the highway, the exterior can be viewed from the street even when the house is closed. The interior is not open on a regular basis; if it is included when the house opens for Satoya Project events should be checked in the event notice (checked 25 September 2026).
The whole building fits into view best from the pavement on the far side of the road. No official statement on photography was found, but the storehouse adjoins a private home, so keep your camera off the grounds behind the gate.
