What the Sato Family Residence Inner Wall Is
The Sato Family Residence Inner Wall (佐藤家住宅内塀, Satō-ke Jūtaku Uchibei) is a garden wall inside a merchant family's estate on the Oshu Kaido highway in Ogawara Town, Miyagi Prefecture, built around 1939 and listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 28 June 2017. It is a timber wall with a small roof of Sangawara-buki pantiles, its eaves finished in sheet iron, and it runs for 75 metres in all, with a gate.
The Sato Family Residence Inner Wall encloses three separate spaces: the garden in front of the reception rooms southwest of the main house, the area in front of the dining room southeast of the house, and the courtyard of the new reception wing. Guests, family meals and the Meiji reception rooms each get their own walled space.
The outer wall around the estate totals 54 metres. The inner wall, at 75 metres, is longer: more wall went into dividing the inside of the property than into closing it off from the street.
Why It Was Listed
The Sato Family Residence Inner Wall was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape, and the Agency for Cultural Affairs calls it indispensable to the look of the estate.
It is lightly built. Only the eaves of the tiled roof are finished in sheet iron, which keeps the edge of the roof thin. The wall is of the Shinkabe type with its posts exposed, and on the side facing the main house's courtyard it is faced entirely in split bamboo, a deliberate refinement. The wall changes character depending on which side you stand.
Its gate is a bracketed udegimon, and the upper part of its pair of board doors carries a pattern of staggered diamonds, a small ornament that lends the garden entrance a touch of formality.
What to Look For
Look for the split-bamboo facing on the courtyard side of the main house. Narrow strips of bamboo laid edge to edge make a fine, soft surface quite unlike plaster.
Then find the gate and check the top of its doors. The staggered-diamond ornament is small and easy to miss unless you are close.
The sheet-iron eaves cut the weight of the tiles off at the edge, which reads as a way of keeping the top of the wall crisp. Seen from the gardens, the roof line of the Sato Family Residence Inner Wall runs low and light.

The Sato Family Residence Inner Wall stands inside the estate and cannot be seen from the street. It can be seen only when the house is opened for Satoya Project events (checked 25 September 2026); check the event notice to see if the gardens are included.
