Important Intangible Folk Cultural Properties of Miyazaki

A nationally designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property transmitted for over 400 years in the Sakamoto district of Gokase Town, Miyazaki. Sixty warriors in Sengoku-era armor, bearing spears, naginata, bows, and matchlocks, perform more than a dozen dances combining vigorous processional movement and elegant circle formations. Inscribed by UNESCO in 2022 as part of Furyū-odori, it is Miyazaki's only entry on the list.

Yamanokuchi no Bunya Ningyō, performed in the foothills of Miyakonojo City in Miyazaki Prefecture, is a one-person-operated puppet theater accompanied by Bunya-bushi, an old jōruri chanting style that predates the more familiar Gidayū-bushi. Brought back from Kyoto and Osaka by Satsuma frontier samurai during the Edo period, it was designated a Nationally Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property in 1995. With its sorrowful 'weeping melodies,' unique puppet-manipulation techniques, and comedic interludes performed in local dialect, this rare living tradition can still be experienced at the dedicated local museum, one of only a handful of places in Japan preserving the original form.
