Former Yokouchi Clinic

A Western-Style Clinic with a Japanese House Behind

The Former Yokouchi Clinic (旧横内医院) is a country clinic with the doctor's house of 1932 in Shimadachi, Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on December 3, 2024 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency records a single-storey timber building with a partial basement and a tiled roof, with a building area of 171 square metres, extended between 1965 and 1974; registration number 20-0661.

A Western Clinic and a Japanese House

The Former Yokouchi Clinic stands south of Oniwa Station on the Kamikochi Line, facing east on its plot: a clinic and family house in one (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Round columns carry a porch under a gently curved hip-and-gable roof at the front.

The Western-style clinic has walls of washed-finish mortar above a base made to look like stone, and a Japanese-style family house is joined at the back (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The consulting room, dispensary and other fittings survive.

Why It Was Registered

The Agency notes that it keeps its consulting room and dispensary and tells the history of local medicine, and registered it as a model of design.
