What Is Hozoji Temple Shoin?
Hozoji Temple Shoin (法蔵寺書院, Hōzō-ji Shoin) is a mid-Edo-period reception building standing off the southeast corner of the priests' quarters at Hozoji, a Jodo Shu (Pure Land) Buddhist temple in Toyoshina, Azumino City, Nagano Prefecture, and it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (Building) on December 26, 2005.
In a Japanese temple, a shoin is the formal room where guests are received. The Hozoji Shoin is a single-story wooden building with a tiled roof and a building area of 65 square meters. Its simple gable roof (Kirizuma-zukuri) runs north to south, a lean-to roof (Geya) is attached on the west side, and the roofing is pan tile (Sangawara-buki). It sits tucked beside the much larger priests' quarters.
The Layout of the Hozoji Temple Shoin
According to the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the plan consists of two 10-mat rooms side by side, wrapped by a veranda. The inner room is fitted with the three classic elements of a formal reception room: a display alcove (Tokonoma), staggered shelves (Chigaidana) and a built-in writing bay (Tsukeshoin).
Those three features are the standard markers of rank in a Shoin-zukuri interior, and the Hozoji Shoin includes all of them despite its modest two-room size. The inner room, where guests would be seated, is set up as the more formal of the two.
Why the Hozoji Temple Shoin Was Registered
It was registered under the criterion of buildings that have become a model for later design. The Agency describes it as small but carefully built with generous use of fine timber, and as a building that reflects the tendencies of shoin architecture in this region. In other words, it earned its place through material and workmanship rather than size.
The Agency dates the Hozoji Shoin to the mid-Edo period, between 1661 and 1750, and records the same two relocations as the priests' quarters, in 1871 and 1907. Azumino City's cultural property plan describes how the priests' quarters came here in detail but says nothing about the shoin. Where the shoin came from, and whether it followed the same route, could not be confirmed from published sources.
Visiting the Hozoji Temple Shoin
The Hozoji Shoin stands in a secluded spot off the southeast corner of the priests' quarters. No interior opening could be confirmed, and since the alcove, shelves and writing bay are all inside, it is best to assume you will not see them on an ordinary visit.
From outside you can make out the long north-south gable and the low lean-to roof on the west side. The area behind the priests' quarters is part of the temple household, so view the shoin from the paths in the grounds rather than walking up to it, and keep photography to the exterior.
