Suwako Hotel

The Suwako Hotel (諏訪湖ホテル) by Lake Suwa in Kogandori, Suwa City, Nagano Prefecture, just south of the Katakurakan, keeps two buildings of 1928, the guest house and the Kikunoma, which were registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on October 28, 2011 (Agency for Cultural Affairs). They are owned by Katakura Kosan Co., Ltd.

The Two Buildings

The guest house on the north edge of the site is a two-storey timber house whose hipped, pantiled exterior is in a Spanish style, with Western rooms below and Japanese rooms above in Italian marble and Taiwan cypress. The Kikunoma beside it to the south-east is a single-storey Japanese building with a hip-and-gable roof and rooms all in the sukiya style. The Agency notes that the Western and Japanese wings together tell the history of the modern villa (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Each is described on its own page.
