What Is the Kobayakawa Family Residence Gate?

The Kobayakawa Family Residence Gate (小早川家住宅門, Kobayakawa-ke Jūtaku Mon) is the front gate of a samurai estate in Jonai 2-chome, Shimabara City, Nagasaki Prefecture, a one-bay Yakuimon built in the late Edo period (roughly 1830 to 1868) and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 23 February 2012. It is a timber gate with a gabled Kirizuma-zukuri roof laid with pantiles.

The gate stands on the east side of the plot, a little north of center. Open it and the entrance of the main house is straight ahead, so a single line runs from the street through the gate to the front door. This is the face the estate shows to the town.

How a Yakuimon Is Built

A yakuimon is a gate in which the door hangs between two main posts, while a second pair of shorter posts stands behind them to carry the roof. Because the ridge sits between the front and rear posts rather than directly over the doors, the roof seems to reach well forward when you face the gate.

The Kobayakawa Family Residence Gate is modest in size: 2.6 meters across and 1.5 meters deep. Its main posts measure 0.26 meters across the face and are cut from rectangular timber, wider on the front than they are deep. Horizontal tie beams called Nuki pass through the main posts and the rear Hikaebashira to lock the frame together.

There is no carving and no decorative metalwork here. The heavy posts and the joinery that holds them are simply left on view, and the structure is the design. The Agency for Cultural Affairs sums it up as a plain, solidly made front gate.

Why the Gate Was Registered

The Kobayakawa Family Residence Gate was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. Both the Agency for Cultural Affairs and Nagasaki Prefecture single it out for preserving the formal entrance of a Shimabara samurai residence.

Only two of the four registered parts of the estate date from the Edo period: this gate and the stone wall. The gate was already guarding the entrance here before the present main house went up in 1890. Stone walls run off from either side of it, and a curving section of stone wall separates the forecourt between the gate and the house. Seen together with those walls rather than on its own, the gate shows how the entrance to a senior retainer's house was arranged.

Seeing the Kobayakawa Family Residence Gate

The Kobayakawa Family Residence Gate faces the street on the east side of the estate, so its exterior can be seen from the road at any time. Standing square in front of it makes the relationship between the front and rear posts, and the way the tie beams pass through them, easy to follow. Step back to one side and you can read the yakuimon profile, with the gable roof projecting forward beyond the main posts.

You can pass through the gate only when Shimabara City holds a public opening. On those days you can walk up to the entrance of the main house and see for yourself how the gate and the front door line up.
