A Brick Chimney with a Column's Crown
The Miyazaki Shoten Chimney (宮崎商店煙突) is a brick brewery chimney of 1906 in Kaminomachi, Shimabara City, Nagasaki Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on July 1, 2003 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency records a brick structure 12 metres high; registration number 42-0028.
Between the Old Kettle Room and Koji Room
The Miyazaki Shoten Chimney rises north of the old kettle room behind the store and south of the former Kojimuro, or koji room, that adjoins the east side of the shochu storehouse (Agency for Cultural Affairs). It stands deep in the plot, between two of the brewery's working rooms.
It is round in plan and about 12 metres tall. Near the top, two projecting brick rings wrap the shaft, giving it the outline of a Tuscan column from classical architecture (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
Why It Was Registered
The Agency registered the Miyazaki Shoten Chimney for its contribution to the historic landscape, noting that while a chimney is standard equipment for a brewery, this one has become something of a symbol of Kaminomachi. Of the three Miyazaki Shoten registrations, it is the only one classed as a structure other than a building.
What to Look For
The two rings at the top are the detail to find. Seen from below, they read like the capital of a column (Agency for Cultural Affairs). At around 12 metres, the chimney clears the low tiled roofs around it and serves as a landmark for Kaminomachi.
Visiting
The Miyazaki Shoten Chimney stands at the back of a private plot, and no official information on close-up visits was found as of October 2026. Its top can be seen from the surrounding streets.
