A Storehouse on a Gentle Slope
The Miyazaki Shoten Shochu Brewery (宮崎商店焼酎蔵) is a clay-walled brewery storehouse of 1906 in Kaminomachi, Shimabara City, Nagasaki Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on July 1, 2003 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency records a 2-storey storehouse built in the clay-walled Dozo-zukuri manner, with a tiled roof and a building area of 197 square metres; registration number 42-0027.
A Storehouse Nine Bays Long
The Miyazaki Shoten Shochu Brewery stands west of the store, at the south end of the plot, its ridge running north to south (Agency for Cultural Affairs). It is a 2-storey brewery storehouse, 9 by 4 bays (see Ketayuki and Harima), with a gabled roof of pantiles and its entrance on the long side (Hirairi).
A Munafuda ridge tag shows that its master carpenter, 荒木輝美雄 (Araki), also built the store (Agency for Cultural Affairs), so the shop and the storehouse survive side by side as the work of one builder in one year. Against the northern part of its east wall stands the former Kojimuro, or koji room, with the brick chimney just to the south.
Why It Was Registered
The Agency registered the Miyazaki Shoten Shochu Brewery for its contribution to the historic landscape. Its south gable faces a gentle slope, and for anyone looking from the castle side toward the Shimabara Road it serves as a landmark. At 197 square metres it is the largest of the three Miyazaki Shoten structures.
What to Look For
The south gable is the view to look for. Walking from the castle side toward the Shimabara Road, you meet the storehouse's gable wall head-on partway along the gentle slope (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Along its long side, the thick clay walls run for 9 bays.
Visiting
The Miyazaki Shoten Shochu Brewery is privately owned, and no official information on interior access was found as of October 2026. The south gable can be seen from the sloping lane along the south side of the plot.
