The House at the Center of an 1860 Brewery
Umegae Sake Brewery Main House (梅ヶ枝酒造主屋, Umegae Shuzō shuoku) is a single-story timber building completed in 1860 at the center of the Umegae Sake Brewery compound in Jomacho, Sasebo City, Nagasaki Prefecture, and it became a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on February 14, 2002. For generations it was both the brewing family's home and the business office; today its earthen-floored front serves as the tasting room and sales counter.
The building measures 18 meters along the ridge and 8 meters deep, with its ridge running east to west. A 4-meter-wide Geya lean-to runs along the south side, and the entrance is cut into its east end. At 216 square meters of building area it is the second largest of the seven registered structures, behind only the former brewing storehouse.
The brewery traces its founding to 1787, so the Umegae Sake Brewery Main House came some 73 years into the firm's history. What the original family house looked like is not recorded in any published source.
A Roof With Two Different Ends
The roof is laid with Sangawara-buki pantiles in a form Japanese records call kata-irimoya: one end is finished as a hip-and-gable Irimoya-zukuri roof, the other as a plain Kirizuma-zukuri gable. Approach the Umegae Sake Brewery Main House from the east and then from the west and the silhouette changes noticeably.
The main house was registered under the criterion of contributing to the historic landscape of the country. It is also the only one of the seven buildings with a construction year rather than an era, which makes it the reference point for dating everything around it.
The south lean-to carries a story of its own. The Agency for Cultural Affairs entry for the neighboring bottling plant identifies it as a former kamaba, the area where rice was steamed for brewing. In other words, the office, the family rooms and a working part of the brewery once sat side by side under one roof, a layout typical of Japanese sake houses.
What to Look For at the Umegae Sake Brewery Main House
Start with the doma, the packed-earth floor just inside the entrance. The Agency describes it as the part now used for tastings and sales, so the space where the household once received callers still receives them.
Then look up. The brewery's own tour page points out a black pine beam more than 80 centimeters across, polished dark with age, alongside the sugidama, the ball of cedar sprigs that sake makers hang out front. It is remade each year when the new sake is ready and signals to passers-by that the season's brew is out.
Outside, the south elevation explains the plan best. The low roof of the lean-to sits a step below the main roof, and the entrance opens at its eastern end; that step in the roofline is the 4-meter strip added along the front.
Visiting the Umegae Sake Brewery Main House
The Umegae Sake Brewery Main House is the one registered building visitors can walk into without a reservation. The tasting and sales area in the doma is open during the brewery's business hours, while the living quarters and office behind it are not advertised as open to the public.
