A Garden-Facing Retreat Inside a Working Brewery
Umegae Sake Brewery Residence (梅ヶ枝酒造住居, Umegae Shuzō jūkyo) is a late Edo-period single-story timber house standing northeast of the main house in the Umegae Sake Brewery compound in Jomacho, Sasebo City, Nagasaki Prefecture, and it became a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on February 14, 2002. Among the seven registered buildings it is the only one with no part in making sake.
It measures 11 meters by 6.3 meters, with a building area of 70 square meters, the smallest of the group. The ridge runs east to west under a Sangawara-buki pantile roof of a half-hipped type: one end is finished as a Yosemune-zukuri hip, the other as a Kirizuma-zukuri gable.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes the building as having the character of a hanare, a detached annex facing a garden to the southeast. Where the main house handled the ledgers and daily family life, the Umegae Sake Brewery Residence reads as a place to receive guests and to rest.
Three Rooms and a Layered Edge
Inside the Umegae Sake Brewery Residence are just three rooms. The principal room is eight tatami mats and has a Tokonoma alcove and display shelves; two six-mat rooms adjoin it. Few rooms, with rank signaled by the alcove, is the arrangement of a formal reception space more than an everyday home.
An Engawa veranda wraps the south and east sides, and beyond it runs a Tsuchibisashi, an outer eave sheltering a strip of earthen floor. Stepping from tatami to wooden veranda to earthen strip before reaching the garden, you pass through three layers, which gives the threshold between inside and outside real depth. Opening two sides draws the eye toward the garden in the southeast.
Like its neighbors, the residence was listed for contributing to the historic landscape of the country. Because a domestic building survives alongside the brewing sheds, the Umegae site is registered as a place of both trade and family life.
What to Look For at the Umegae Sake Brewery Residence
Stand at the southeast corner. The veranda turns the corner from south to east and the earthen eave follows it, so this is where the double edge is most legible. Compare the two ends of the roof as well: the hipped end sits low and calm, the gabled end shows its triangular face.
The building is lower than the brewery sheds and roughly a third of their size. Seen against the big storehouse roofs, the Umegae Sake Brewery Residence and its garden form a quieter corner of the compound, and that contrast is much of its interest.
Visiting the Umegae Sake Brewery Residence
The Umegae Sake Brewery Residence is part of the owners' private space, and its interior is not advertised as open. You may see the garden side from within the grounds during a brewery tour; follow your guide on where you can walk, and ask before photographing a home that is still in use.
