Echigo Tokimeki Railway Ichiburi Station (えちごトキめき鉄道市振駅, sometimes romanized Ichifuri) is a stop on the Nihonkai Hisui Line in Ichiburi, Itoigawa City, Niigata Prefecture, and its wooden station building and brick lamp shed, both completed in 1908, were entered on the register of Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on February 27, 2023. It is the westernmost station in Niigata; the prefectural border with Toyama lies just beyond it.

The Nihonkai Hisui Line is the Niigata stretch of the old Hokuriku Main Line, now run by Echigo Tokimeki Railway. According to the company, work on this section began in the 1907 to 1912 period and the whole route was open by 1913. Ichiburi sits at its western end, and trains of the Toyama-side operator, Ainokaze Toyama Railway, run through to the station.

East of Ichiburi rise the cliffs of Oyashirazu, long the most feared passage on the old Hokuriku coast road. Itoigawa City describes the station as having doubled as a works base for driving the railway through that rugged stretch between Tomari and Itoigawa, and Echigo Tokimeki Railway says the building served as a construction base for the Oyashirazu Tunnel. That explains why the Ichiburi Station building is a few years older than the line itself.

Two Registered Structures

Both structures at Ichiburi Station were registered on February 27, 2023, in the 104th round of listings, under consecutive numbers 15-0576 and 15-0577 and under the same criterion: buildings that have become a model of design. The station building at neighbouring Oyashirazu was registered the same day. The Agency for Cultural Affairs database gives the following dates and sizes.

• Station building: 1908, renovated in the late Showa period; single-storey timber, tile and artificial slate roofing, building area 172 square meters
• Lamp shed: 1908; single-storey brick, tiled roof, building area 9.9 square meters

A registration plaque sent by the Agency was presented at Ichiburi Station on July 29, 2024, in a ceremony attended by officials from Itoigawa City and Niigata Prefecture, according to the railway's own report. Speakers at the ceremony noted that these were the first railway buildings registered on the Hisui Line; the company's Myoko Haneuma Line had seen railway structures registered earlier.

How the Station Is Laid Out

The east half of the Ichiburi Station building holds the waiting room and the west half the office rooms. The main door opens on the south side of the waiting room; a lean-to canopy wraps around the building, forming the old ticket gate on the east and a covered passage on the north. That northern passage is still the way out to the tracks.

The lamp shed stands just west of the station building, facing north. The two registered points are a little over 30 meters apart, so from the station forecourt a glance toward the western end of the building brings the red-brick shed with its tiled roof into view. Seen together, they show how a Meiji-era station kept its lighting oil in a separate brick store beside the main building.

Getting There and Visiting

From Itoigawa Station on the Hokuriku Shinkansen, change to the Nihonkai Hisui Line; Ichiburi is about 20 minutes away, with Oyashirazu about 12 minutes along the same route. From the Toyama side, Ichiburi is about 10 minutes from Tomari. The timetable revised on March 14, 2026 shows roughly 20 departures a day in each direction from Ichiburi, about one every 1 to 1.5 hours through the middle of the day.

Echigo Tokimeki Railway Ichiburi Station is unstaffed, with no ticket window or ticket machine, though it does have toilets. The exterior of the station building and the lamp shed can be seen from the forecourt at any time, free of charge.
