The Echigo Tokimeki Railway Ichiburi Station Lamp Shed (えちごトキめき鉄道市振駅ランプ小屋, also romanized Ichifuri) is a single-storey brick oil store built in 1908 in the grounds of Ichiburi Station, Itoigawa City, Niigata Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on February 27, 2023. Its footprint is just 9.9 square meters, about the size of a six-mat room.
A lamp shed held the fuel oil that a station burned for light. Before electric lighting reached the railways, yard work and carriage interiors were lit by oil lamps, and the fuel had to be stored well away from anything that might catch fire. Itoigawa City notes that the Ichiburi Lamp Shed stored fuel for working lamps, while Echigo Tokimeki Railway's line guide calls it the "red-brick warehouse" and presents it as a survivor of the steam era.
Why It Was Registered
The Ichiburi Station Lamp Shed was listed on February 27, 2023, in the 104th round of registrations, as No. 15-0577, under the criterion of a building that has become a model of design. The Agency for Cultural Affairs credits it with showing what the oil store of a late Meiji railway station looked like.
For a storage hut, the care in the brickwork is striking, and that is the point of the registration. Itoigawa City describes the specification as a balance of strength and ease of construction, chosen for building in a harsh climate. Another Echigo Tokimeki Railway station, Nihongi, keeps a brick lamp shed of exactly the same 9.9-square-meter footprint, and the company's line guide mentions the two together.
Sawtooth Eaves and Pediments
The lower walls of the Echigo Tokimeki Railway Ichiburi Station Lamp Shed are laid in English bond, English bond, with courses of long faces and short ends alternating one above the other, the bond most Meiji railway brickwork used. At eaves height the pattern changes to gangi-zumi, also called momiji-jabara: bricks set corner-out in a sawtooth band that runs all the way round. It throws a jagged line of shadow just where wall meets roof.
The tiled gable roof (Kirizuma-zukuri) ends in a triangular pediment at each end, a classical Western form brought, rather charmingly, to an oil store of under 10 square meters.
There is a single doorway on the north side. The side windows sit on stone sills and are topped by jack arches, flat arches of bricks set on end in a fan. Inside, the floor is beaten earth, the walls are finished in mortar, and the roof is carried on a Japanese-style timber frame (Wagoya). Western on the outside, Japanese in the roof frame.
Visiting
The Ichiburi Station Lamp Shed stands immediately west of the station building, facing north. You can see the exterior from the forecourt and the station grounds at no charge. It is a storehouse and not open inside; as of September 2026 no interior openings had been announced.
The combination of sawtooth band and pediment is easiest to read when you look at a gable end at an angle. For the brickwork itself, move toward the side windows to see the stone sills and jack arches up close. This is operating railway land, so keep clear of the tracks and out of the way of trains.
