The Echigo Tokimeki Railway Ichiburi Station Building (えちごトキめき鉄道市振駅駅舎, also romanized Ichifuri) is a single-storey timber station building in Ichiburi, Itoigawa City, Niigata Prefecture, completed in 1908 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on February 27, 2023. It still serves passengers on the Nihonkai Hisui Line as the station's waiting room.
The building has a gabled roof (Kirizuma-zukuri) laid with interlocking pan tiles (Sangawara-buki) and covers 172 square meters. The waiting room occupies the east half and the station office the west. It was renovated in the late Showa period, but the outer arrangement is still recognisably Meiji. Echigo Tokimeki Railway, the owner, describes the structure as timber with some steel framing, a slightly different wording from the plain "single-storey timber" entry in the Agency for Cultural Affairs database.
The Ichiburi building went up before the line opened. Itoigawa City and the railway both say it served as a works base for the construction through the cliffs to the east, the Oyashirazu Tunnel in particular. In other words, the Ichiburi Station Building supported the builders before it ever sold a ticket.
Why It Was Registered
The Ichiburi Station Building was listed on February 27, 2023, in the 104th round of registrations, as No. 15-0576, under the criterion of a building that has become a model of design. The Agency's note places it as a former Hokuriku Main Line station on the Sea of Japan at the far western edge of Niigata and credits it with conveying what railway stations in the Hokuriku region looked like at the end of the Meiji era (1868 to 1912).
What earns that judgement is the lean-to canopy (Geya) wrapped around three sides and the way the roof was fitted out for snow country. Itoigawa City points to the canopy-lined, cloister-like arrangement as typical of national railway stations built between the late Meiji and Taisho years.
The Wraparound Canopy and the Ridge Fittings
At the Ichiburi Station Building the slate-roofed canopy starts at the door on the south side of the waiting room, becomes the ticket gate on the east face and turns into the passage to the platforms along the north. One of the photographs in the Agency's database, captioned as the former ticket gate, shows this eastern stretch. The result is a continuous run of eaves around three sides, from the entrance to the track side.
Then look up at the ridge. Metal fittings run along the top of the tiled roof; they were there for tying off lifelines when staff climbed up to shovel snow. Those small pieces of hardware say a good deal about a station designed on the assumption that people would be working on its roof through heavy winters beside the Sea of Japan.
The brick lamp shed, also built in 1908, stands just west of the station. From the western end of the Ichiburi Station Building you can take in the pair together: timber station and brick oil store, the standard combination of a Meiji station yard.
Visiting
The Ichiburi Station Building is a working station, and the waiting room is open to rail users. The railway's own line guide singles out the retro tourist information board inside the waiting room. The office rooms in the west half are not open to the public.
The exterior can be viewed freely from the station forecourt, and there is no charge. The three-sided canopy reads best from the southeast, which is also the viewpoint of the main photograph in the Agency's database. Step back and look up to see the line of lifeline fittings on the ridge. Photography should not get in the way of trains or passengers.
