Former Aikawa Tax Office Main Building at a Glance

The Former Aikawa Tax Office Main Building (旧相川税務署本館, Kyū Aikawa Zeimusho Honkan) is a two-story timber tax office built in 1931 on Nagasaka in Aikawa, Sado City, Niigata Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2009. Its footprint covers 277 square meters.

The core is a Western-style block under a hipped roof (Yosemune-zukuri) laid with pantiles (Sangawara-buki). Two gabled wings (Kirizuma-zukuri) project from the back, so in plan the building reads as a broad front range with two arms reaching to the rear. It was extended in 1949 and served as Aikawa's tax office until 1970.

Why the Main Building Was Registered

Almost everything that earned the Former Aikawa Tax Office Main Building its listing is on the street front. A central bay rises under a gambrel roof, the kind whose slope breaks partway down. At each end a projecting bay carries a small gable ornament at the eaves. Every window is tall and narrow, and the two halves mirror each other exactly. The Agency for Cultural Affairs sums the facade up as strongly vertical and symmetrical.

The walls are clad in overlapping horizontal boards (Shitami-itabari), which lay fine horizontal lines across the whole front. The tall windows cut across those lines in a steady rhythm, and on a building that is wider than it is tall, the eye still ends up traveling upward. Tile, timber boarding and a hipped roof were ordinary local materials; the achievement is how they were marshaled into a composed, official-looking face.

The formal criterion is contribution to the historic landscape. Sado City calls the building a landmark of central Aikawa, and for anyone walking up or down Nagasaka it is exactly that.

What to Look For at the Former Aikawa Tax Office Main Building

Start at the center and look up. Follow where the gambrel roof breaks and how that line relates to the second-floor windows below it; the height of the whole facade is gathered into this middle bay.

Then shift to the ends. The little eave gables echo the central roof in a different shape, giving the skyline three peaks.

For the full massing, walk a short way up the slope and look back at an angle. From there the rear gables appear behind the hipped main roof and the building's depth becomes clear.

Seeing the Former Aikawa Tax Office Main Building

Sado City's heritage listings give no information on opening the interior of the Former Aikawa Tax Office Main Building, so visits are limited to the exterior from Nagasaka. The front can be seen almost in full over the gate. No photography restrictions are posted for shots taken from the lane, but please do not step onto the grounds to take pictures. The archive behind the building is hidden by the main block and can barely be seen from the front.
