A Brewhouse Dated by Its Ridge Tag
The Hirata Dairoku Family Residence Sake Brewery (平田大六家住宅酒蔵, sakagura) is a late-Edo brewing storehouse in Omi, Sekikawa Village, Niigata Prefecture, whose eastern section was built in 1845, and it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 14 October 1999. It belongs to the estate of the Hirata family, sake brewers since the Genroku era, and stands directly north of their main house, parallel to it.
The building is of Dozo-zukuri construction, with thick clay walls meant to resist fire. Most of it is a single storey, with an upper floor over part of the interior, all under a tiled roof. It measures 9 by 4 Ken and covers 119 square metres. Its registration number is 15-0037.
One Roof, Two Periods
What looks like one long building is really two. A Munafuda, the wooden tag carpenters fixed to the ridge on completion, dates the eastern 5 ken (bays) to 1845. The western 4 ken are thought to have been added in the early Meiji period, extending the Edo-era brewhouse to the west.
This is where the sake was made and kept. While the family was still in business, the Hirata Dairoku Family Residence Sake Brewery was used to set the brew and store the finished sake. Of all the buildings on the estate, it did the central work.
The registration criterion, as for the whole estate, is contribution to the historic landscape. A firm date from the ridge tag and a position squarely behind the main house make this building the backbone of the working half of the compound.
What to Look For
Inside, according to the Agency for Cultural Affairs, a second-floor frame covers 2 ken of the building's 4 ken depth. Only half the width was floored over, which suggests the other half rose open to the roof.
The orientation is deliberate. The ridge of the Hirata Dairoku Family Residence Sake Brewery runs east-west, in line with the main house to the south. Squeezed between them is the small storehouse of 1835, and the sake starter storehouse stands to the northeast. The family put its main production building immediately behind the house.
Where the 1845 section meets the Meiji extension, and whether the join shows on the outside, is not described in published sources. Counting from the east end, though, everything beyond the first 5 ken is the later work.
Visiting
The brewery is not open to the public, and no opening has been announced (checked 25 September 2026). Its interior, including the partial upper floor, is known only through the national database. Because it stands behind the main house on the north side of the plot, it is unclear how much can be seen from outside.
