A Brick Stub Marking a Lost Workshop
The Hirata Dairoku Family Residence Chimney (平田大六家住宅煙突, entotsu) is a late-Meiji brick chimney in Omi, Sekikawa Village, Niigata Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 14 October 1999. It stands on the Hirata family's brewing estate, between the main house and the sake starter storehouse.
The shaft is 1.2 metres square and about 3.6 metres high, surprisingly short if you picture a factory stack. Its registration number is 15-0039, and it is classed not as a building but as an "other structure."
Why a Chimney Was Registered
The Hirata Dairoku Family Residence Chimney marks the site of a building where rice was washed and steamed and the finished sake was pressed. That building is gone; only the chimney is left. The Agency for Cultural Affairs calls it an essential element for understanding how the estate worked when the family was still brewing.
It most likely served the boiler used for steaming rice, though the agency does not say what equipment it vented.
The other five registered buildings are a house and storehouses. The chimney is the surviving clue that the preparatory stages of brewing took place on this spot.
What to Look For
The brickwork is laid in English bond, alternating courses of stretchers (long faces) and headers (short ends). In Japan this bond is said to have spread through brick construction from the middle of the Meiji period.
The agency notes that the Hirata Dairoku Family Residence Chimney uses yokan, named after the long bar of bean-paste sweet: bricks split in half lengthwise, known in English as queen closers. In English bond they are slipped in at the corners to shift the joints. On a shaft only 1.2 metres across, the corners make up much of what you see, so they are the place to read the bond.
With its workshop gone, the chimney now stands as a single accent in the estate's landscape.
Visiting
The chimney is not open to the public, and no opening has been announced (checked 25 September 2026). It stands inside the compound between the main house and the starter storehouse and is only about 3.6 metres tall, so it is unlikely to be visible from outside. Do not enter the grounds.
