The Jikoji Temple Main Hall
The Jikoji Temple Main Hall (慈光寺本堂, Jikō-ji Hondō) is the Soto Zen worship hall of Jikoji in Hiruno, Gosen City, Niigata Prefecture; built in 1763, it became a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on February 23, 2012.
The hall stands at the eastern back of the Jikoji compound and faces west toward the main gate. It measures 9 by 8 ken (bays) and covers 526 square metres, a single-storey timber building under a copper-clad Irimoya-zukuri roof. Its predecessor was lost in the fire of 1755, and the present hall went up four years after the priests' quarters. It was altered around 1955 and again in 2007.
At the back is a founder's hall (kaisandō), the chapel that honors the monk who founded a temple. Here it is built out in the kakezukuri manner, its floor carried on tall posts so that it projects behind the main building.
Why the Jikoji main hall was registered
The Agency for Cultural Affairs praises the care taken over the details of the Jikoji main hall, singling out the formal alcove fittings of the central room and the frog-leg struts (Kaerumata), and judges the building well ordered inside and out. It was registered for contributing to the historic landscape of the country.
The plan is of the six-room type: two rows of three rooms, a layout shared by most Soto Zen main halls, wrapped here by an inner corridor and an outer veranda. The front middle room, the shicchū, is where ceremonies center, and it is where the Jikoji hall keeps its alcove display.
One detail is unusual. The broad front veranda of a temple hall is normally boarded, but at Jikoji its front half is left as an earth floor (Doma), so the front of the building has a strip of bare ground inside the line of the eaves.
What to look for at the Jikoji Temple Main Hall
Step into the forecourt beyond the gate and the big hipped-and-gabled roof of the Jikoji main hall fills the view. The Zen hall and common quarters join its northwest corner and the priests' quarters its southwest corner, and from here the three read as one continuous range. The main hall's scale makes most sense seen as the center of that range.
Closer in, look for the earth-floored front section of the veranda.
The founder's hall at the rear cannot be seen from the forecourt. Its projection on posts is a reminder of where the Jikoji main hall sits: at the very back of the compound, pushed against the foot of the mountain.
Visiting the Jikoji Temple Main Hall
Gosen City lists the buildings of Jikoji as open to view from outside only, so a visit to the main hall means looking at it from the forecourt during the temple's opening hours. If you hope to see the central room and its alcove, contact Jikoji before you go (tel. 0250-58-4000).
