The Jikoji Temple Zen Hall and Common Quarters
The Jikoji Temple Zen Hall and Common Quarters (慈光寺禅堂及び衆寮, Jikō-ji Zendō oyobi Shuryō) is a late Edo-period building at Jikoji in Hiruno, Gosen City, Niigata Prefecture, that houses both the meditation hall and the monks' common quarters, and it became a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on February 23, 2012.
The building is joined to the northwest corner of the Jikoji main hall and faces south. It measures 24.5 by 11.1 metres, with a building area of 280 square metres, a single-storey timber structure under a copper-clad Irimoya-zukuri roof. It was renovated in 1987. The corridor that runs north from the main gate ends against it.
Why the Jikoji Zen hall was registered
The Agency for Cultural Affairs regards the Jikoji Zen hall as a faithful example of how Soto Zen temples of the late Edo period laid out their meditation halls. It was registered for contributing to the historic landscape of the country.
Inside, the front bay is an earth-floored passage (Doma). Behind it, the western half is the Zen hall proper, with an altar platform (Shumidan) at the center and the tan arranged around it. A tan is the tatami-covered platform assigned to each monk; by long-standing Zen custom he sat in meditation, ate and slept in that one place.
The eastern half is the shuryō, the common quarters where monks read scripture and the recorded sayings of the Zen masters, and rested away from the meditation hall. At Jikoji the two sit side by side, west and east, under one roof.
What to look for at the Jikoji Temple Zen Hall
As you face the main hall, the Jikoji Zen hall and common quarters is the long wing on your left, to the north. Its south front looks onto the forecourt and stretches 24.5 metres.
Pay attention to the joints. On one side the building meets the northwest corner of the main hall, and on the gate side it meets the corridor. It sits at the hinge of the compound, linking gate, corridor and main hall, and in a temple that flourished as a training monastery the monks' daily routes ran through it.
Visiting the Jikoji Temple Zen Hall and Common Quarters
Gosen City lists the buildings of Jikoji as open to view from outside only, so most visitors see the Zen hall from the forecourt. Jikoji offers zazen sessions by reservation April through October, but the official information does not name the building where they take place. If you would like to see the interior, ask the temple when you book.
