The Jikoji Temple Main Gate
The Jikoji Temple Main Gate (慈光寺山門, Jikō-ji Sanmon) is the vermilion entrance gate of Jikoji in Hiruno, Gosen City, Niigata Prefecture; built in 1785, it became a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on February 23, 2012.
The gate stands at the center of the west front of the Jikoji compound, with a corridor attached to each side. It is a three-bay, single-passage gate of the eight-legged type (hakkyakumon), 5.8 metres wide, under a gabled Kirizuma-zukuri roof of pan tiles (Sangawara-buki). It went up exactly thirty years after the fire of 1755 and twenty-two years after the main hall of 1763.
"Eight-legged" describes the frame. Four main pillars stand in a line along the gate's axis, and each is braced by a supporting post in front and another behind, eight in all. Only the central bay is a passage; the bays on either side of it enshrine statues of the Four Heavenly Kings, guardian deities of Buddhist teaching.
Why the Jikoji gate was registered
According to the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the frame of the Jikoji gate follows the Zen style (Zenshūyō). The bracket sets are of the simple three-bearing type, a carved frog-leg strut (Kaerumata) fills the space between pillars, and the gable ends carry a double tie-beam (Kōryō) with another frog-leg strut above.
What the Agency singles out, though, is the color. The woodwork is painted red, and in a precinct where the buildings are otherwise left as bare wood (Shiraki-zukuri) the Jikoji gate strikes a different note. It was registered for contributing to the historic landscape of the country.
With its red standing out against the bare wood behind it, the Jikoji Temple Main Gate catches the eye as you climb the steps from the cedar avenue. We found no source explaining why it was painted.
What to look for at the Jikoji Temple Main Gate
From the top of the steps, look at the Jikoji gate head-on first and find the Four Heavenly Kings in the bays on either side of the passage. Temple gates usually place two on each side.
Then move a little to one side and look up at the gable end, where the double tie-beam and strut sit. They cannot be seen from the front. The corridors meet the gate at the rear bay of each side, so the clearest view of the gable is from a point slightly forward of the gate.
The three-bearing brackets on top of the pillars and the struts between them are easy to pick out from the front once you are close.
Visiting the Jikoji Temple Main Gate
The Jikoji gate stands directly ahead at the top of the stone steps, and its exterior can be seen during the temple's opening hours. Gosen City lists the buildings of Jikoji as open to view from outside only.
We could not find guidance on photographing the Four Heavenly Kings. It is courteous to check with the temple (tel. 0250-58-4000), or with someone at the temple on the day, before pointing a camera at the statues.
