A garden gate between display and daily life
Mori Clinic Middle Gate (森医院中門, Mori Iin Chūmon) is a timber gate on the Mori medical family's estate in Manoshinmachi, Sado City, Niigata Prefecture, built in the early Showa era and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 18 October 2006.
It stands at the edge of the garden that spreads east of the main house. It is an udekimon, a gate whose roof rests on arms projecting from the posts, 2.1 metres wide under a gabled pantile roof (Kirizuma-zukuri). The national database classes it among miscellaneous structures and counts it as one building.
An inner boundary
The criterion is contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes Mori Clinic Middle Gate as the boundary between the garden east of the main house and the living quarters on the south side of the plot, and says it forms a calm space together with the garden.
Mori Clinic has two gates. The stone gate on the street separates the estate from the outside world; Mori Clinic Middle Gate works inside the estate, dividing a garden meant to be looked at from the areas of everyday life. Both date from the early Showa era, but they guard different thresholds.
Wide but plain
For a gate of its kind, Mori Clinic Middle Gate has a fairly generous opening, yet the carpentry is simple and restrained, the national description notes.
Where the front gate shows off its tooled and polished stone, this one keeps ornament to a minimum and settles into the view of the garden. At 2.1 metres it is narrower than the 3.8 metre front gate, but it is ample for a passage between the garden and the household's working areas.
