A green clinic wing on the front yard
Mori Clinic Hospital Building (森医院病院棟, Mori Iin Byōintō) is the consulting wing of the Mori medical family's estate in Manoshinmachi, Sado City, Niigata Prefecture, built in 1932 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 18 October 2006.
It is attached to the northern end of the main house and looks onto the front yard. The building is two storeys of timber under a hipped roof (Yosemune-zukuri) of pantiles (Sangawara-buki), 14 metres by 9 metres, with a building area of 122 square metres. Sado City describes it as a hospital building that blends Japanese and Western styles.
Its date rests on paperwork rather than style. According to Sado City, the year of construction is known from the family's own file of documents on the clinic's building and alterations.
The clinic's public face
Like the other seven structures at the estate, Mori Clinic Hospital Building was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape.
Its position explains its role. Anyone coming through the gate met the front yard first, with the hospital building beside it. It was the first thing a patient saw, the public face of the medical practice.
The main house of 1909 kept a traditional Sado form; the clinic wing built 23 years later adopted a new look. Rather than rebuild the home, the Mori family left it as it was and added the practice as a separate wing.
Clapboards, brackets and little gables
The walls are clad in overlapping horizontal boards (Shitami-itabari) set between the posts, and the eaves are carried on brackets (Mochiokuri). On the north and east slopes of the roof sit small gabled roofs fitted with handrails, which the Agency for Cultural Affairs treats as deliberate accents.
A hipped roof topped with miniature gables has nothing in common with the main house next door. Add the green colour scheme and Mori Clinic Hospital Building stands out from everything else on the site.
How the railed gables were used is not recorded in the sources consulted.
