A doctor's house built from an older house
Mori Clinic Main House (森医院主屋, Mori Iin Shuoku) is the residence of the Mori medical family in Manoshinmachi, Sado City, Niigata Prefecture, built in 1909 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 18 October 2006.
It is the building that faces you as you come in from the street: two storeys of timber under a gabled roof (Kirizuma-zukuri) laid with pantiles (Sangawara-buki), covering 356 square metres. The core block measures 25 metres by 15 metres, with an extension added on.
Nothing else at Mori Clinic comes close in size. The 1932 hospital building joins its northern end, and the miso storehouse is attached to the south side of the western extension. The rest of the estate is arranged around this house.
Why it was registered, and a change of direction
The registration criterion is contribution to the historic landscape. Mori Clinic Main House was registered as the centrepiece of that landscape at the Mori estate.
What stands out in the Agency for Cultural Affairs description is how the house came to be. It was built in 1909 from the members of an existing house that had its entrance on the long side, the arrangement known as Hirairi. When those timbers were put back together, the entrance moved to the gable end, or Tsumairi. In effect, an older house was taken apart and rebuilt turned through 90 degrees.
In a tsumairi house the triangular face of the roof stands over the entrance, so the change would have transformed how the building met anyone arriving from the street. The sources do not say why the family made it.
Even with the reuse, the main structural members survive in good condition, the database notes. The late Meiji rebuilding and the frame of the earlier house are layered in a single building.
An open void above the living room
Inside, the defining feature is the void over the chanoma, the room where the family gathered to eat. Instead of a ceiling, the space rises open above it. The Agency for Cultural Affairs identifies this as a characteristic of Sado farmhouses.
So although Mori Clinic Main House was a doctor's residence, its heart follows the island's own house-building habits. Set it beside the hospital building added 23 years later, with its mix of Japanese and Western features, and you can see the home and the practice being built in two different architectural languages.
Seeing Mori Clinic Main House
Mori Clinic Main House is a private home and the interior is closed, so the living-room void cannot be seen.
The exterior is viewed from outside the gate, across the front yard. Because the house stands directly opposite the entrance, the layout makes it the easiest of the eight structures to see from the street. Please stay outside the gate and keep your stop short.
