Nakahara Family Residence Annex

A Taishō Guest Wing Off the Main House

The Nakahara Family Residence Annex (中原家住宅離れ, Nakahara-ke Jūtaku Hanare) is an early Taishō-period guest wing standing southwest of the main house on the Nakahara estate in Akatsuka, Nishi-ku, Niigata City, listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan on May 10, 2018.

It is a single-story timber building under a tiled roof, with a building area of 69 square meters, joined to the main house by a covered corridor and facing east like its larger neighbor. The Agency for Cultural Affairs dates it to the early Taishō period, 1912 to 1918, while the preservation society's guide map puts the annex, together with the brick wall, in 1919. The sources differ by about a year.

The roof is a hip-and-gable form in Sangawara-buki pantiles. Lean-to eaves (Geya) run around all four sides, sheltering an inner veranda (Uchien). Inside are three rooms: an eight-mat room with a formal alcove, a six-mat room, and a small two-mat room.

Why It Was Registered

The Nakahara Annex was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The agency's commentary reads it as evidence of how a great headman's estate developed in the modern era.

The 1860 main house was a working building, fronted by the estate office and a formal entrance for officials. The annex, by contrast, sets apart rooms for leisure and hospitality at the back of the property. It shows what a family grown wealthy as landlords after the Meiji Restoration chose to add.

Its front and sides are glazed from end to end with glass doors. Domestic plate-glass production took off in the Taishō era, and houses in the provinces began to wrap their verandas in glass. The Nakahara Annex pairs a traditional hip-and-gable reception room with that new kind of joinery.

What to Look For

The pleasure of the Nakahara Annex is its light. The deep lean-to eaves soften the sun before it reaches the glass, so the rooms glow rather than glare. Sit in the eight-mat room and the garden trees fill the full width of the glazing.

Glass of this era often has a faint ripple. Walk slowly past the doors and watch whether the view outside wavers. Published sources do not say which panes are original, so treat any ripple as a clue rather than proof.

Notice, too, the shift as you cross the corridor from the main house: from the public world of the estate office and formal entrance into a private room made for guests.

Visiting the Annex

The Nakahara Annex sits deep in the grounds southwest of the main house and cannot be seen from the road. It can be visited only on the spring and autumn open days. Whether the interior is open and whether photography is allowed varies, so check with staff on the day.
