A strongbox by the front wall
The Ledger Storehouse stands along the south boundary wall at the front of the estate. Held to date from the early Showa period, it is a two-story storehouse built to keep the Ito family's household valuables.
It is gabled and entered from the long side, with kannon doors facing the main house and a protective eave in front of them. Set on a low plinth, it is a compact building that reads as strong and closed rather than open.
Why it was registered
Listed on 25 May 2000, the storehouse was recognised as difficult to reproduce. Its interest lies in the care and weight of its construction: this is a small building made unmistakably solid.
The upper walls are finished in white plaster over a lattice-patterned namako base, and the posts and beams throughout use thick timber. Everything about it signals that what it held mattered.
Where to see it
Because it lines the front boundary, the Ledger Storehouse is among the buildings you pass near the entrance, its heavy plaster mass framed against the perimeter wall. The namako base and thick eave repay a look on the way in or out.
Compact and self-contained, it makes a useful contrast with the larger storehouses deeper in the grounds.
