Two manners under one plan
Sekisui-an and Zeku-ken stand southeast of the Great Hall, set to face the strolling garden to the north. Completed in 1950 (Showa 25), the building takes an L-shaped plan that carries two different characters at once.
The wing on the garden side, roofed in thatch, is Sekisui-an. The wing running east, roofed in pantiles, is Zeku-ken. One reads as a rustic grass hut, the other as a more formal shoin room, joined at the bend of the L.
Why it was registered
Listed on 25 May 2000, the tea house was recognised as a well-judged design. Its achievement is the join itself: two contrasting tea aesthetics brought into a single coherent building without either overpowering the other.
The designer, Tanaka Taiami, also created Sadokan-tei and the garden, and the same eye for setting a building into its surroundings is at work here, with the pond framed to the north.
Where it meets the garden
The pairing is easiest to grasp from outside, where thatch and tile meet at the angle of the plan and announce the two moods before you enter. From within, the rooms open toward the water.
As one of the garden's several tea houses, it rewards being seen in relation to the pond and the buildings around it rather than on its own.
