A Walkway Between Two Buildings
The Ryokan Memorial Hall Corridor (良寛記念館回廊) is a reinforced-concrete covered corridor of the mid-Showa period in Yoneda, Izumozaki Town, Santo District, Niigata Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on August 1, 2016 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency records construction in 1964 and describes a reinforced-concrete corridor 23 metres long; registration number 15-0454.
Linking Reception and Gallery
The Ryokan Memorial Hall Corridor is the covered walkway between the administration building, where visitors check in, and the exhibition building that shows Ryōkan's calligraphy (Agency for Cultural Affairs). A wall runs along its south side, and the floor and roof are cantilevered out from it, so the other side has no posts at all.
It is by Yoshiro Taniguchi, like the two buildings it joins (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Together the three enclose the garden of the museum.
Why It Was Registered
According to the Agency, the Ryokan Memorial Hall Corridor does more than frame the garden with the two buildings: it is said to have been given a strong meaning as the passage into the exhibition building, imagined as a sacred world. It was registered as a model of design, the element that ties the whole museum together.
What to Look For
At the Ryokan Memorial Hall Corridor, notice how far the floor and roof reach out on the side with no posts (Agency for Cultural Affairs): a wall and a cantilever carry the whole 23-metre run.
The museum says visitors crossing the corridor toward the galleries tend to exclaim at the view of the Sea of Japan and Sado Island on the horizon. Pause here before you step into the exhibition building.
Visiting
The Ryokan Memorial Hall Corridor is the route every visitor takes from reception to the galleries, so you will walk it as part of any visit. No official information on photography in the corridor was found.
