The Exhibition Building at a Glance

The Ryokan Memorial Hall Exhibition Building (良寛記念館展示棟) is a reinforced-concrete exhibition building of the mid-Showa period in Yoneda, Izumozaki Town, Santo District, Niigata Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on August 1, 2016 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency records construction in 1961 and renovations in 1985 and 2005, and describes a single-storey reinforced-concrete building roofed in metal sheet, with a building area of 135 square metres; registration number 15-0452.

A Building Made to Show Calligraphy

The Ryokan Memorial Hall Exhibition Building was put up in Izumozaki, Ryōkan's birthplace, to display his calligraphy and related works, and was designed by Yoshiro Taniguchi (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Inside, Ryōkan's own brushwork hangs alongside paintings of him by leading Japanese artists (Niigata Prefecture).

It is a single-storey hall with a gabled roof entered at the gable end (Tsumairi), wrapped on the east, west and north by an open veranda (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The Agency dates the building to 1961, while Niigata Prefecture and Izumozaki Town give 1965 for the completion and opening of the museum; the two do not match.

Why It Was Registered

The Agency notes that the Ryokan Memorial Hall Exhibition Building keeps a low profile that sits easily in its surroundings, and calls it a fine example of Taniguchi's hallmark: Japanese forms expressed in reinforced concrete. It was registered as a model of design.

What to Look For

At the Ryokan Memorial Hall Exhibition Building, look at the low gable front and the veranda running round three sides (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Built in concrete, it still reads like a timber house with an engawa, which is the point of Taniguchi's approach.

A stone carved with one of Ryōkan's poems stands behind the museum (Niigata Prefecture), so walk round the outside of the building after the galleries.

Visiting

The Ryokan Memorial Hall Exhibition Building is the museum's gallery, so its interior can be seen with an admission ticket. According to the museum, visitors reach it by crossing the corridor after paying at reception. No official information on photography in the galleries was found.
