The Family's House Beside the Lord's Hall
The Tada Family Residence Main House (多田家住宅主屋) is a residence of 1864 at the estate of the Tada family, head village officials of the Ichiba district of the Usuki domain, in Ichiba, Mie-machi, Bungo-Ono City, Oita Prefecture, and it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on June 25, 2002, under registration number 44-0080.
According to the Agency for Cultural Affairs, it is a two-storey timber building with a tiled roof and a building area of 200 square metres. A north-south block adjoining the Onari-yashiki on its east, it is dated to 1864 by its ridge tablet.
Why It Was Registered
The Tada Family Residence Main House was registered as contributing to the historic landscape of the country. Its gable-end entrance opens parallel to the entrance of the Onari-yashiki, and together the two buildings form an L-shaped plan around a garden, the framework of the estate's appearance.
What the Agency highlights is how its design is set apart from the Onari-yashiki, for example in the upward curve of its roof surface. Built in the same year as the hall for receiving the lord, the family's own house was deliberately given a different, lesser form, an instructive example of how rank was handled in a late Edo headman's estate.
What to Look For
The main house has a gable-end entrance that opens parallel to the Onari-yashiki's formal shikidai entrance on the long side. The two entrances side by side show how the doorway for guests and the doorway of the home were kept apart.
Compare the roofs too: the main house's roof surface rises in a gentle convex curve (mukuri). Bungo-Ono City likewise notes that the main house is designed a step below the Onari-yashiki.
Visiting
The Tada Family Residence is a privately owned home, and no official information on public opening or visits was found. Do not enter the grounds; view the buildings quietly from outside. The history of the estate and contact details are on the Tada Family Residence page.
