A Rice Store of a Headman's Estate

The Tada Family Residence Storehouse (多田家住宅蔵) is an earthen-walled storehouse of 1864 at the estate of the Tada family, head village officials of the Ichiba district of the Usuki domain, in Ichiba, Mie-machi, Bungo-Ono City, Oita Prefecture, and it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on June 25, 2002, under registration number 44-0081.

According to the Agency for Cultural Affairs, it is a two-storey dozo storehouse with a tiled roof and a building area of 58 square metres. It stands behind the main house and was originally used to store rice.

Why It Was Registered

The Tada Family Residence Storehouse was registered as contributing to the historic landscape of the country. Both the Agency and Bungo-Ono City describe it as a building that shows the standing of a headman's estate.

A head village official stood between the domain and its villages, overseeing matters such as the collection of rice taxes, and a rice storehouse is the building that makes that role visible on the estate. Built in 1864 alongside the main house and Onari-yashiki, it anchors the back of the grounds.

What to Look For

Its most distinctive feature, as the Agency notes, is its height. It stands on a stone foundation with a raised floor, with namako tiling on the lower walls and plaster rendered all the way up to the eaves. The raised floor keeps the rice away from damp, and the plastered walls resist fire.

Look at the entrances too. There are two on the side facing the main house, each with its own small roof, a sign of how closely daily life in the house was tied to the storehouse.

Visiting

The Tada Family Residence is a privately owned home, and no official information on public opening or visits was found. Do not enter the grounds; view the buildings quietly from outside. The history of the estate and contact details are on the Tada Family Residence page.
