The Lord's Gate

The Tada Family Residence Onari Gate (多田家住宅御成門) is a gate of 1864 at the estate of the Tada family, head village officials of the Ichiba district of the Usuki domain, in Ichiba, Mie-machi, Bungo-Ono City, Oita Prefecture, and it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on June 25, 2002, under registration number 44-0079.

According to the Agency for Cultural Affairs, it is a timber gate with a tiled roof and a width of 1.7 metres. It is a single-bay yakuimon gate standing directly in front of the formal shikidai entrance of the Onari-yashiki.

Why It Was Registered

The Tada Family Residence Onari Gate was registered as contributing to the historic landscape of the country. The Agency describes it as built, together with the Onari-yashiki, to receive the lord of Usuki, expressing the standing of a headman's estate and indispensable to the landscape of the grounds.

A yakuimon carries its roof over main posts and rear support posts and was used as the gate of a house of standing. Building a dedicated gate in front of the hall for receiving the lord says much about the headman family's position.

What to Look For

Both the Agency and Bungo-Ono City single out the roof: a gentle pitch with a strong upward sweep, which gives this small gate, just 1.7 metres wide, a light, lifting outline.

Notice its position as well. The gate stands directly in front of the Onari-yashiki's shikidai entrance, creating a straight approach from gate to doorway. Looking through gate and entrance in one line shows how the estate was arranged for the lord's arrival.

Visiting

The Tada Family Residence is a privately owned home, and no official information on public opening or visits was found. Do not enter the grounds; view the buildings quietly from outside. The history of the estate and contact details are on the Tada Family Residence page.
