A Channel and a Stone Bridge Before the Gate
Toshoji Temple Waterway Stone Walls and Stone Bridge (洞松寺水路石垣及び石橋, Tōshō-ji Suiro Ishigaki oyobi Ishibashi) is a stone-lined water channel and a small granite bridge in front of the main gate of Toshoji, a Soto Zen monastery in Yakage, Okayama Prefecture, built in the late Meiji period and listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on July 25, 2011. The channel runs east to west just north of the Sanmon for 17 meters, walled in stone on both banks, with the bridge at its center. The walls total 33 meters.
Random Rubble and a Gently Arched Granite Span
The channel walls are Ranzumi, split stone laid in random courses. The bridge is only 2.8 meters wide and 1.5 meters long, made of granite beams laid side by side. Their top faces are cut into a shallow arch, like a miniature humpbacked bridge, and the end stones are shaped with projecting lugs.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs reads the channel and bridge as a symbolic kekkai, the boundary between sacred and everyday ground, at the entrance to a Zen monastery. Making visitors cross a line of running water just before the gate means they have already stepped over a threshold before they reach it.
What to Look For
Toshoji Temple Waterway Stone Walls and Stone Bridge lies underfoot in the last few steps before the Sanmon. Pause on the bridge and look along the channel to east and west: the rubble walls edge both banks in straight lines.
The arch of the granite beams shows best from the side, a faint curve that marks the bridge out on an otherwise level path. Crouch near the ends to find the carved lugs.

The channel and bridge sit on the approach in front of the Sanmon and can be seen freely. Visitors walk over the bridge, but the stone gets slippery in wet weather and when moss grows, so watch your footing. Do not climb the walls or step down into the channel. Photography is unrestricted.
