The Working Heart of a Zen Monastery
Toshoji Temple Priests' Quarters (洞松寺庫裏, Tōshō-ji Kuri) is the kitchen and administrative block of Toshoji, a Soto Zen monastery in Yakage, Okayama Prefecture, built in 1752 and listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on July 25, 2011. Attached to the north side of the Abbot's Quarters, it is 28 meters long and 12 meters deep, with a building area of 296 square meters.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records an extension in 1843 and a renovation in 1997. The roof combines hip-and-gable Irimoya-zukuri and plain gabled Kirizuma-zukuri sections in Sangawara-buki pantiles, and the bathhouse at the north end sits under a separate, lower roof.
An Earthen Hall, a Framed Door and the Cook's Office
The center of the building is a wide Doma, an earth-floored hall, entered through a framed and paneled door of the sankaradō type often found on Zen temple buildings. Off the doma are rooms including the tenzo-ryō, the office of the tenzo, the monk in charge of meals. Dōgen, founder of Japanese Soto Zen, wrote a whole treatise, the Tenzo Kyōkun, on why that job matters.
The Agency calls Toshoji Temple Priests' Quarters a fine example of a Kuri at a provincial Zen monastery and notes that, together with the Zen Hall facing it across the courtyard, it preserves the layout of a Zen compound well. In Zen training, cooking and cleaning count as practice just as sitting does. Setting the meditation hall and the kitchen hall face to face turns that idea into site planning.
What to Look For
The Priests' Quarters stretches along the west side of the courtyard, to your right as you enter through the Sanmon. Stand toward the north end of the courtyard and look along the 28-meter roof: at the far north end it drops a step. That lower section is the bathhouse.
The framed door at the center is the building's public face, the big entrance to the doma through which supplies and people have entered the temple's working side for generations. Pace out the distance across the courtyard to the Zen Hall opposite, and the two buildings read clearly as a planned pair.
Visiting the Priests' Quarters
This is a working building where the monks' meals are cooked and temple business is done. There is no provision for viewing the interior, so plan to see it from the courtyard. The kitchen and bath are living spaces; do not peer in through doorways or point a camera inside. If you have business with the temple, phone ahead first.
