A Main Hall That Faces North

Toshoji Temple Main Hall (洞松寺本堂, Tōshō-ji Hondō) is the principal hall of a Soto Zen monastery in Yakage, Okayama Prefecture, built in 1697 and listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on July 25, 2011. It stands at the far end of the precinct facing north, 19 meters across and 15 meters deep, with a building area of 290 square meters, and the Yakage Board of Education counts it as the largest temple main hall in town.

The roof takes the hip-and-gable Irimoya-zukuri form, laid partly in heavy round-and-flat Hongawarabuki tiling and partly in lighter Sangawara-buki pantiles. The Agency for Cultural Affairs records repairs in 1785 and 1979. The frame itself is still the one raised in 1697.

A Zen Hall Laid Out Like an Abbot's Residence

In Soto Zen a main hall is more than a shrine for the principal image. It is also the room for memorial services, sermons and the formal rites of monastic life. Toshoji Temple Main Hall follows what Japanese architectural historians call the six-room hojo plan: two rows of three rooms, with a large central front room, the ōma, opening onto the Naijin, the inner sanctuary where the main image sits.

A broad veranda two bays deep runs across the front and wraps down the west side. It is the first floor you step onto as you approach.

The registration notes single out the interior. Both the ōma and the sanctuary have coved, raised ceilings, a signal of rank. Between them stand thick round pillars carrying two-stepped Kumimono bracket sets, and the space between the pillars is framed with a pointed Katōmado arch, a curve Zen temples normally keep for windows and doorways. The Agency's summary sets the building apart as a Soto main hall designed with unusual care.

What to Look For

Step through the Sanmon and the long front of the hall fills the far side of the courtyard. Because it faces north, the facade spends most of the day in shade, which suits the darkened timber. For the full scale of the roof, walk back toward the north end of the courtyard and look up: from there the irimoya gable and the sweep of heavy tile read clearly.

At its eastern end the hall meets the Bell Tower, which leads on to the Zen Hall, and at the back a tablet hall ties it to the Founder's Hall. Walk down the sides and follow where each roof meets the next. The Main Hall is the hinge the whole compound turns on.

Visiting the Main Hall

The exterior of Toshoji Temple Main Hall can be viewed from the courtyard. Inside, the hall is used for services and practice, and visitors cannot simply walk in. In January 2024 it hosted a public zazen event run jointly with Daihonzan Sojiji, and sittings like that are the realistic chance to see the coved ceilings and round pillars from within. Contact the temple ahead if you hope to enter, and ask before taking photographs indoors.
