A Red-Tiled Gate in Okinawan Style

The Okinawa Hotel Ufudomon Gate (沖縄ホテル大道門) is the front gate of a hotel, with a red Ryukyu tile roof of 1961 in Daido, Naha City, Okinawa Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on March 6, 2024 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency records a reinforced-concrete gate with a tiled roof, 5.9 metres wide; registration number 47-0091.

A Gate in Traditional Okinawan Design

The Okinawa Hotel Ufudomon Gate stands on the path from the street to the hotel grounds (Agency for Cultural Affairs). It is a one-bay gate with brackets set into the tops of square concrete posts to carry the eave beams.

Its gabled roof is covered in red Ryukyu tiles, with descending ridges at both gables and a ridge-end tile on the main ridge (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

Why It Was Registered

The Agency notes that, in the design of traditional Okinawan architecture, it adorns the entrance of a hotel representative of postwar Okinawa, and registered it for its contribution to the historic landscape.
