What the Tsukayama Brewery Garden Is
The Tsukayama Brewery Garden (津嘉山酒造所庭園, Tsukayama Shuzōsho Teien) is an early Showa-era pond garden at the Tsukayama awamori distillery in Onaka, Nago City, Okinawa Prefecture, registered as a Registered Monument (place of scenic beauty) of Japan on 26 March 2021. The Agency for Cultural Affairs gives its area as 1,467.04 square metres.
According to the Agency's detailed commentary, the founder of the brewery, Tsukayama Chōho (1880 to 1945), acquired this plot in 1927, built a combined distillery and residence, and began making Kokka awamori. The garden is thought to have been laid out at about the same time. The distillery escaped destruction in the war, and the garden survived with it.
The Tsukayama Brewery Garden has two parts: a forecourt garden to the southwest of the main house and a main garden to its southeast. The main garden is the heart of the design, with a long, narrow pond.
Why the Tsukayama Brewery Garden Was Registered
The Agency registered the Tsukayama Brewery Garden as a distinctive garden made for a distillery in the early Showa era, and as a meaningful example of how landscape gardening developed in modern Okinawa Prefecture.
Two features stand out. The narrow pond is said to represent the outline of Okinawa Island. And the stones lining the pond and set as accents are Paleozoic limestone from the north of the island. In other words, a pond-garden format that came from mainland Japan was rebuilt here around the local map and local stone.
What to Look for in the Tsukayama Brewery Garden
A Pond Shaped Like Okinawa
The main garden of the Tsukayama Brewery Garden was composed to be seen from the main house. The Agency explains that, viewed from the house, the far right end of the pond corresponds to northern Okinawa, and that stone groupings and an upright stone stand for Cape Hedo, the island's northernmost point, and Gusuku-yama, the peak of Ie Island off the Motobu Peninsula. Hold a map of Okinawa in mind as you look toward the far right of the pond and try to pick out which stones play the cape and the island peak.
Northern Limestone and a Lantern of 1930
The pond banks are lined with Paleozoic limestone from the Yanbaru region of northern Okinawa. Bringing stone from the island's northern hills into a town garden in Nago is one of the qualities the Agency singles out.
On the far bank stands a stone lantern inscribed with the date Showa 5 (1930), followed by two characters that can no longer be read. It is one of the few dated objects in the garden and supports the early Showa date for its making, so it is worth stepping in front of the lantern to find the inscription.
Visiting the Tsukayama Brewery Garden
The Tsukayama Brewery Garden lies within a working distillery that is also a family home. The official website accepts brewery tours free of charge without booking, but it says nothing about access to the garden, so ask on your tour how close you can go. Because the pond was designed to be seen from the main house, the best view, where available, is from near the house veranda looking toward the far right of the pond. The website does not mention photography either. Opening times and directions are on the Tsukayama Brewery page.
