A Tiny, Brightly Painted Shrine
The Abe Oji Shrine Kuzunoha Inari Shrine Main Hall (Former Otokoyama Hachiman Shrine Main Hall) (阿倍王子神社葛之葉稲荷神社本殿(旧男山八幡神社本殿)) is a subsidiary shrine hall of the late Edo period (1751 to 1830) in Abeno Motomachi, Abeno Ward, Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on September 10, 2019 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency records a single-storey timber hall roofed in cypress bark, with a building area of 1.4 square metres, moved in 1908 and again in 1969; registration number 27-768.
A Small Hall Under a Shelter
The Abe Oji Shrine Kuzunoha Inari Shrine Main Hall faces south inside a protective shelter east of the worship hall (Agency for Cultural Affairs). It was first the main hall of Otokoyama Hachiman Shrine and was moved in 1908 and again in 1969.
The hall is one bay by two, slightly wider than deep, with a hip-and-gable roof of cypress bark and a cusped gable over the front porch (Agency for Cultural Affairs). In the porch, the arms of the linked bracket sets reach inward to join the brackets beneath the porch beam.
Why It Was Registered
The Agency registered it as a model of design: a tiny shrine, painted red throughout with rich colours at key points, that is lavish in its detail.
What to Look For
Inside the shelter, look at the red paint, the bright colours at key points and the way the porch brackets link together (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
Visiting
The precinct is open for worship. Directions to the shrine are on the Abe Oji Shrine page.
