A Small Hall with an Unusual Frame

The Abe Oji Shrine Former Main Hall (阿倍王子神社旧本殿) is the former main hall of a shrine of 1908 in Abeno Motomachi, Abeno Ward, Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on September 10, 2019 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency records a single-storey timber hall roofed in copper, with a building area of 7.2 square metres, moved in 1968; registration number 27-767.

The Old Main Hall on the South Side

The Abe Oji Shrine Former Main Hall stands facing east on a cut-stone base along the south side of the precinct of Abe Oji Shrine, beside the old Kumano Road (Agency for Cultural Affairs). It was built in 1908 and moved to this spot in 1968.

It is a nagare-style hall roofed in copper, one bay wide and two deep. The front eave is bent once into a sloping gable and carries a cusped gable, the main frame rests on simple boat-shaped brackets, and the middle posts on the sides rise all the way to the ridge (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

Why It Was Registered

The Agency registered it as a model of design, a plain shrine hall of unusual construction.

What to Look For
