The Fence Around the Sanctuary

The Abe Seimei Shrine Lattice Fence (安倍晴明神社透塀) is a lattice fence enclosing a shrine main hall of 1924 in Abeno Motomachi, Abeno Ward, Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on September 10, 2019 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency records a timber fence roofed in copper, 25 metres long; registration number 27-771.

A Fence Marking the Sacred Ground

The Abe Seimei Shrine Lattice Fence runs from the back of the worship hall to enclose the main hall on all sides; it is timber with a copper roof (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Chamfered square posts are tied by rails at waist and lintel height, with diamond-section slats above the waist rail and vertical boards below.

The little roof rests on beams carried by projecting brackets, with widely spaced rafters in a single tier (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

Why It Was Registered

The Agency registered it for its contribution to the historic landscape: finely made of good timber, it gives the setting of the main hall a dignified frame.
