A Roofed Bridge Between the Temple and Its Guardian Shrine
Kongoji Temple Chinju Bridge (金剛寺鎮守橋, Kongō-ji Chinju-bashi) is a timber bridge built in 1941 at Amanosan Kongoji in Amanocho, Kawachinagano City, Osaka Prefecture, and it was listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on June 28, 2017. Chinju refers to the tutelary deities who protect the temple.
Kongoji's central halls stand west of the Amano River, while the shrine to its guardian deities sits on the wooded hill to the east. The Kongoji Temple Chinju Bridge crosses the river close to the entrance of the precinct and joins the two. The temple's conservation plan places it southeast of the Romon, the two-storey gate.
A gabled roof hovering over the water signals, even from a distance, that this crossing belongs to the path toward the shrine.
A Canopy Carried on Its Own Posts
The Kongoji Temple Chinju Bridge was registered as a model of design. The Agency for Cultural Affairs gives its length as 6.4 metres and its width as 3.0 metres, and notes that the girders rise in a gentle camber.
The feature to study is the roof. The gabled, copper-sheeted canopy stands on posts that are independent of the bridge itself, so the deck never carries the weight of the roof. The Agency calls it a bridge with a properly built roof structure, fitting for temple grounds.
The temple's conservation plan dates the canopy to January 16, 1941. Its inventory describes the roof as gabled and tiled, which conflicts with the Agency's record of copper sheeting; this article follows the Agency.
A Full Dismantling Repair Under Way
The Kongoji Temple Chinju Bridge is in the middle of a major repair. The conservation plan that the temple issued in March 2025 reported heavy damage to the bridge and its canopy, and found that the stone embankment on the east bank, where the bridge lands, was bulging and hollowing because of earth pressure and soil loss. The plan made a full dismantling repair, with a seismic assessment and strengthening, a short-term priority.
A temple notice dated January 11, 2026 says the work forms part of the precinct improvement project, runs through the 2025 and 2026 fiscal years, and has closed the bridge. The closure is scheduled to last until March 31, 2027.
Taking a timber bridge apart reveals joints and hidden decay that no outside inspection can reach, so the repair report should add to what is known about this structure.
Visiting the Kongoji Temple Chinju Bridge
While the closure lasts, the Kongoji Temple Chinju Bridge cannot be crossed. Construction machinery is working nearby, and the temple asks passers-by to take care. Check the news page of the temple website for the reopening date.
