A Dining Hall Built as a Pair with the Lecture Hall
Kongoji Temple Great Lecture Hall Refectory (金剛寺大講堂食堂, Kongō-ji Daikōdō Shokudō) is a timber dining hall built in 1942 at Amanosan Kongoji in Amanocho, Kawachinagano City, Osaka Prefecture, and it was listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on June 28, 2017. It should not be confused with the much older refectory (jikido) in the temple's central compound; this one is read shokudo and belongs to the twentieth century.
The Kongoji Temple Great Lecture Hall Refectory stands on the east bank of the Amano River, immediately north of the Great Lecture Hall. The Agency for Cultural Affairs calls it a fine example of a modern temple facility, built in one campaign with the lecture hall. A room for large audiences and a room to feed them were planned together, which says a good deal about how Kongoji used its east bank in the early Showa years.
An Irregular Plan Shaped by Use
The plan is not a simple rectangle. According to the Agency, a corridor 9 shaku (about 2.7 metres) wide runs along the front, and behind it sit the dining room, the kitchen, and two book storage rooms. Because each room has its own depth, the outline steps in and out. The dining room has its own entrance porch.
The Kongoji Temple Great Lecture Hall Refectory is a single-storey timber building with a building area of 347 square metres and a roof of pantiles.
Finishes follow a clear hierarchy. Only the dining room has a coffered ceiling; the other rooms make do with simple batten ceilings. The walls are exposed-post plaster with clapboard along the lower part. Effort went where people gathered, and nowhere else.
What the Conservation Plan Adds, and Where Sources Differ
The conservation plan that the temple published in 2025 records the Kongoji Temple Great Lecture Hall Refectory in more detail. The corridor is 1.5 ken wide. From north to south come a bathroom, a storeroom, the kitchen, and the dining room, with depths growing from 4 ken at the bathroom to 8 ken at the dining room. The whole building is 14 ken long, and raised clerestory roofs over the bathroom and kitchen let in daylight. There are later additions on the east side.
Not every detail matches the Agency's account. The Agency names two book storage rooms and does not mention a bathroom. It also describes the roof as pantiled, whereas the plan calls it a gabled roof of traditional round-and-flat tiles. This article follows the Agency.
A covered corridor once linked the refectory with the lecture hall. The plan notes that part of it was removed under an approved alteration in June 2022.
Seeing the Kongoji Temple Great Lecture Hall Refectory
The Kongoji Temple Great Lecture Hall Refectory is not on the temple's visitor route, and no public opening of the interior is announced. From outside, look for the clerestory roofs and for the porch in front of the dining room; together they reveal how the rooms are laid out.
