A Meiji Gate at the Entrance to the Honbo
Kongoji Temple Honbo Front Gate (金剛寺本坊表門, Kongō-ji Honbō Omotemon) is the gate of the head priest's quarters at Amanosan Kongoji in Amanocho, Kawachinagano City, Osaka Prefecture; it dates from the late Meiji era (1898 to 1912) and was listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on June 28, 2017.
The Honbo, the temple's administrative centre, stands on the combined sites of two former sub-temples, Chuin and Kanzoin. During the Meiji era Kongoji's sub-temples closed or merged one after another, and groups of them were absorbed into Kongoji in 1888 and 1911. The Agency for Cultural Affairs explains that the Kongoji Temple Honbo Front Gate was moved to its present spot and altered when those sub-temples were consolidated.
It is not the Romon, the two-storey gate at the front of the central compound. This gate serves the Honbo alone.
Heavy Timbers That Signal Rank
The Kongoji Temple Honbo Front Gate was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape.
It is a single-bay Yakuimon facing north, with an earthen wall attached at the side. The gabled roof is covered with round-and-flat tiles. Main posts of oblong section carry a tie beam, which is clamped from above and below by paired cross beams. The eaves have a single layer of closely spaced rafters, and the opening is 2.6 metres wide.
The Agency notes that the members are thick throughout and says the gate, together with the Grand Entrance, expresses the standing of the Honbo. It is not a large gate, but the weight of its posts and beams makes clear that the heart of the temple lies beyond.

Neither the Agency's commentary nor the temple's conservation plan says which sub-temple the Kongoji Temple Honbo Front Gate originally served. What is recorded is that it was moved and reworked during the consolidation.
On gates that have been moved and altered, individual members sometimes differ in tone and surface. When you stand in front of it, trace how the posts, the tie beam, and the paired cross beams lock together.
The conservation plan classifies the Kongoji Temple Honbo Front Gate as a feature to be preserved in its current state. The Honbo site has been inside the Historic Site boundary since the precinct was first designated in 1934.
Visiting the Kongoji Temple Honbo Front Gate
Because the Kongoji Temple Honbo Front Gate faces north, you see its front from the north side of the Honbo. Entry to the Honbo buildings and garden requires the Honbo ticket, sold separately from admission to the central compound.
