About the Former Ueda Family Residence Storehouse No. 1
The Former Ueda Family Residence Storehouse No. 1 (旧植田家住宅土蔵一, Kyū-Uedake Jūtaku Dozō Ichi) in Uematsu-cho, Yao City, Osaka Prefecture is a late Edo period storehouse on the street front of the former kaisho, or estate office, of the Yasunaka Shinden reclaimed fields, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on March 27, 2006 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency records a two-storey earthen storehouse with a tiled roof and a building area of 58 square metres; registration number 27-0362.
A Long Storehouse on the Road
The Former Ueda Family Residence Storehouse No. 1 is a two-storey Dozo-zukuri storehouse eight bays long and two bays deep, standing on the road along the northwest side of the site (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Its Kirizuma-zukuri gabled roof of Sangawara-buki pantiles is an Okiyane, set over the body of the storehouse.
The walls are white Shikkui plaster, with sheet iron over the ground floor (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Two windows open onto the road on the ground floor and three on the upper floor. The Agency calls it the central building of the street front.
Why It Was Registered
The Former Ueda Family Residence Storehouse No. 1 was registered under the criterion of contributing to the historic landscape of the country (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Its long white wall runs along the road and, beside the black-plastered gate, sets the character of the compound's street face.
An Edo Storehouse That Was Moved
The Agency dates the Former Ueda Family Residence Storehouse No. 1 to the late Edo period and records that it was moved to its present spot in the mid-Meiji era, the same period in which the gate and the lodge were built (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The present street front of gate and storehouses seems to have taken shape then.
On its modest size, Professor Yabuta Yutaka of Kansai University suggested in a 2006 lecture that Yasunaka Shinden grew mainly cotton and paid its rents in silver, so a large rice store was never needed (Kansai University).
What to Look For
From the road, look at the Former Ueda Family Residence Storehouse No. 1 where the white plaster meets the sheet iron of the lower wall, and at the rhythm of two windows below and three above (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
Inside, it serves as a folk-tools gallery showing everyday objects of the Meiji, Taisho and Showa eras (museum leaflet). Notice, too, how quiet the room is within the thick earthen walls.
Visiting
The Former Ueda Family Residence Storehouse No. 1 is open as the folk-tools gallery and can be entered with museum admission (museum leaflet). The displays change from time to time, so check the museum's current information. Opening hours and admission are given on the Former Ueda Family Residence page.
