About the Hagiwara Family Residence Tatsumi Storehouse
The Hagiwara Family Residence Tatsumi Storehouse (萩原家住宅巽蔵, Hagiwara-ke Jūtaku Tatsumigura) is a late Edo storehouse for household goods, built between 1751 and 1830, in Onji Nakamachi, Yao City, Osaka Prefecture, and was entered on Japan's register of Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on September 10, 2019. It is a 2-story tiled Dozo-zukuri storehouse of just 19 square meters, the smallest of the 3 Hagiwara storehouses.
It stands in the southeast corner of the plot, east of the main house's reception wing, facing west. Tatsumi means southeast, so the name simply records its direction from the main house; the family also writes it with the zodiac characters 辰巳. Where the cotton storehouse held merchandise, this one kept the family's own belongings and valuables.
Three Plaster Bands and Ship Planks
The Hagiwara Tatsumi storehouse has a Kirizuma-zukuri gabled roof in heavy Hongawarabuki tiles. Its walls are Shikkui plaster, and below the eaves they are built out in 3 Hachimaki bands, thickened strips of plaster that protect the top of the wall. No other storehouse at the Hagiwara Family Residence has three.
The lower walls are clad in old boat planks laid horizontally. White plaster and its three bands above, darkened planks below: the contrast gives the little storehouse a crisp outline.
Two Board Floors Under a Simple Roof
Inside, the Hagiwara Family Residence Tatsumi Storehouse has board floors on both levels. The roof is carried on a ridge beam (Munagi) and purlins, with boards laid over them to take the roofing.
Two floors on a plan of 19 square meters let the family sort its belongings upstairs and down. The storehouse sits right beside the reception rooms of the main house, so the rooms for receiving guests and the store for the household's valued things are next-door neighbors.

The Hagiwara Family Residence Tatsumi Storehouse was registered as contributing to the historic landscape of the country. The Agency for Cultural Affairs credits it, with the main house, for shaping the historic scene along the road, and Yao City presents the main house and the Tatsumi storehouse together as the buildings that give the Higashi-Koya Kaido its character here.
The southeast corner of the plot belongs to the road-facing front of the compound, which is why this is the only storehouse counted as part of the street scene. According to the family, its first restoration was finished in 2019, together with the main house and the barn.
