About the Hagiwara Family Residence Front Gate and High Wall
The Hagiwara Family Residence Front Gate and High Wall (萩原家住宅表門及び高塀, Hagiwara-ke Jūtaku Omotemon oyobi Takabei) are a gate and wall built in the early Taisho era, between 1912 and 1918, in Onji Nakamachi, Yao City, Osaka Prefecture, and were entered on Japan's register of Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on September 10, 2019. The gate is a tiled timber structure 1.2 meters wide; the wall is also timber and tiled, and runs 8.8 meters in all.
A small front garden lies before the southern half of the main house. The high wall encloses it on the east and north, turning the corner at a right angle, and the gate opens in the middle of the north wall. The Edo-period house thus received its formal frontage early in the Taisho era.
A Gate That Reaches Forward
The Hagiwara front gate has an unusual plan. The walls on either side project forward, so from above the gate forms a U. A single Kirizuma-zukuri gabled roof in Sangawara-buki pantiles covers the whole, and Hisashi canopies are fitted over both the front and the back of the doors.
Because the sides project, a small roofed space forms in front of the doors. A visitor is first framed by the two side walls and only then passes through. The opening is just 1.2 meters wide, but the depth turns it into a proper entrance.
Plaster and Vertical Boards
The high wall of the Hagiwara Family Residence also carries a gabled pantile roof. Its face is Shikkui lime plaster in the Shinkabe manner, with posts left exposed, and vertical boards line the lower part.
White plaster, upright posts and the vertical grain of the boards line up under the level edge of the tiles. At 8.8 meters the wall is not long, but because it turns a corner and closes two sides, it gives the southern half of the house a quiet enclosure.
Why the Front Gate and High Wall Were Registered
The Hagiwara Family Residence Front Gate and High Wall were registered as contributing to the historic landscape of the country. The Agency for Cultural Affairs praises their fine and distinctive workmanship for lending dignity to the front of the compound. Yao City singles out the same feature: the gate's side walls pushed forward under a U-shaped roof.
Together with the main house on the road, the gate and wall form the public face of the old cotton merchant's house.

The Hagiwara Family Residence Front Gate and High Wall stand in front of the southern half of the main house. The eastern stretch of wall is on the road side, so its exterior can be seen from the street.
