The Front Gate of the Ishikawa House

The Ishikawa Family Residence Nagayamon Gate (石川家住宅長屋門, Ishikawa-ke Jūtaku Nagayamon) is a nagayamon gatehouse of around 1889 in Fukae-minami, Higashinari Ward, Osaka City, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 27 February 2023.

It is the front entrance of the Ishikawa compound, opening on the south side of the plot. A nagayamon is a gate built into a long, low range of rooms, so that gate and rooms read as a single terrace; such rooms traditionally housed gatekeepers and servants or served as stores. The Agency for Cultural Affairs calls the rooms beside this gate sodebeya, wing rooms.

It is a single-storey timber structure with a tiled roof and a building area of 18 square metres, altered in the early Showa era and again around 1970. The Agency's structural entry adds "with earthen wall on the south", meaning the adjoining wall is included in the registration.

Why It Was Registered

The Nagayamon Gate was registered, as number 27-0867, for its contribution to the historic townscape.

The Agency describes it as the gate that, together with the plastered earthen wall to its west and the annex to its east, makes up the formal street front of the house. Its value lies in being the face the property turns to the street, and a piece of Fukae's older streetscape.

What to Look For

One Roof over Gate and Rooms

The roof is a simple gable of pantiles, with the long side facing the street. Over the gateway the eaves are carried on projecting brackets in the degeta manner, the beam that supports the eaves resting on arms that reach out beyond the posts. Gate and wing rooms share one continuous roof, so that from the street they read as one building under a single eaves line.

Heavy Doors

The gateway holds a massive timber door, the ōdo, alongside a lattice door. The walls are of shinkabe construction, with the posts left exposed, and are boarded along the lower part.

A Lattice Window on the Street

The wing room opens to the street through a projecting lattice window, a degōshi. Set out from the wall face, it lets those inside see out while keeping the room screened from passers-by, and it gives the Ishikawa Family Residence Nagayamon Gate much of its character.

Seeing the Gate

The Ishikawa Family Residence Nagayamon Gate is owned by Ishikawa Co., Ltd.; the space inside the gate and the wing rooms are not open. Because it faces the street on the south side of the plot, it is the easiest of the compound's registered structures to see from outside.

Stand opposite the gate to take in the doors and the lattice window set along a single frontage, then follow the plastered wall that continues to the west. Photograph from the public road only, and do not pass through the gate or touch the doors. Directions to the compound are on the Ishikawa Family Residence page.
