The front gate across the bridge

The Izumi City Kuboso Memorial Museum of Art Teahouse Main Gate (正門, seimon) is the front gate of a tea compound, built in 1937 in the garden of the Kuboso Memorial Museum of Art in Uchida-cho, Izumi, Osaka Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2006.

It stands at the southeast corner of the compound, facing east, directly in front of the arched Senjin-bashi bridge over the Matsuo River. It is an udegimon, a gate whose eaves rest on short brackets projecting sideways from the posts. At 2.1 m wide it is modest. The roof is a pantiled gable, but the eaves and the verges are finished in cypress bark.

Izumi City's guide describes it as the cypress-bark sukiya-style gate that greets you straight ahead after crossing the bridge, with Soan and Chosentei beyond it.

Why it was registered

The Izumi City Kuboso Memorial Museum of Art Teahouse Main Gate was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as simple but carefully made, giving the compound its public face. For a guest arriving over the bridge, it marks the point where the tea world begins.

Mixing tile with a bark edge puts two textures on one small roof: the weight of fired clay and the softness of a plant material. That edging is what gives the gate its light, teahouse character.

What to look for

The double doors are fitted with vertical lattice bars, so the garden beyond shows through even when they are shut. The lintel above the doors is an unsquared log, and the space above it is left open rather than walled in.

The best viewpoint is the bridge itself. Walking across, you have the gate square ahead of you, and the thin bark eaves and the horizontal line of the log lintel read clearly. The roof of Shoin-an sits at the bridgehead to your left.

Visiting

The gate faces the Senjin-bashi and its exterior can be seen from the bridge. Whether visitors can pass through into the roji depends on what the museum has open that day, such as the Sunday opening of Chosentei.

Photography of the tea buildings is allowed, but tripods and selfie sticks are not. Some areas are closed for conservation.
