A Wall That Defines the Estate

The Kaname Family Residence Earthen Wall (要家住宅土塀, Kaname-ke Jūtaku Dobei) is the late-Edo-period earthen wall enclosing the large Kaname family estate in Hatakenaka 2-chome, Kaizuka, Osaka Prefecture, listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on June 28, 2017, in the category of structures other than buildings.

Apart from one corner at the southwest and the stretch west of the Front Nagayamon Gate, it runs around the entire lot for a total of 222 metres. It is capped with hongawara tile, and on the west side it opens in a bracketed udegimon gate 2 ken wide.

Why It Was Listed

The Kaname Family Residence Earthen Wall was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs credits it with forming the imposing enclosure of a headman's estate.

The halls and storehouses are hidden behind it. For anyone walking past, the Kaname Family Residence essentially is this wall and the front gatehouse. A tiled wall 222 metres long turns a lot roughly 90 metres on a side into something you can feel with your feet. Before anyone saw a single room, the family's standing as one of the Seven Headmen was announced by the length of its wall.

What to Look For

Watch the corners. According to the Agency, the wall does not turn at right angles but curves around each corner in an arc and carries on. Rounding the corners lets the long wall wrap the lot as one continuous surface, and walking beside it you pass from straight runs into gentle bends and back again.

The surface is left at the nakanuri, or middle coat. Clay walls were usually built up in three layers, and stopping before the white finish coat leaves the color and grain of the earth exposed. Heavy tile above and plain, earthy plaster below give the wall its character.

The gate on the west side is a second entrance, separate from the front gatehouse. Its roof rests on brackets projecting from the posts, a light and simple form that contrasts with the weight of the main gatehouse.

Visiting

The Kaname Family Residence Earthen Wall surrounds a private home, and there is no entry through its gates. Because it faces outward, though, the wall itself can be seen from outside. Of the eleven Kaname listings, only this wall and the front gatehouse can be viewed this way.

The curved corners are easiest to appreciate by walking along the wall to a corner. No viewing events were announced as of September 25, 2026. Keep photographs to the wall itself, avoid pointing cameras at windows or through gates, and remember that the lanes around it are residential streets.
