A Gatehouse Within the Gate

The Kaname Family Residence Inner Nagayamon Gate (要家住宅内長屋門, Kaname-ke Jūtaku Uchi-nagayamon) is a late-Edo-period Nagayamon gatehouse standing inside the Kaname family estate in Hatakenaka 2-chome, Kaizuka, Osaka Prefecture, listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on June 28, 2017.

It joins the back of the Front Nagayamon Gate at a right angle, so that the two gatehouses form a T in plan. The single-storey timber building has a gabled roof of hongawara tile and covers 36 square metres. An inner gate opens at its center, with a storage room to the south and an attendants' room to the north.

A house normally had just one gatehouse, on the street. Here a second one stands inside the first, and the Agency for Cultural Affairs calls it a valuable inner gatehouse with almost no known parallels.

Why It Was Listed

The Kaname Family Residence Inner Nagayamon Gate was registered as a model of architectural form. Its importance lies in how it divides space.

The Front Nagayamon Gate has two openings: a formal gate leading to the Front Shoin and a kitchen gate leading to the main house. The inner gatehouse stands between them and splits the ground beyond into two separate zones, the forecourt of the Front Shoin where the lord and guests were received, and the forecourt of the main house entrance. The Agency describes it as marking that division clearly.

Guests and household were steered apart the moment they came through the outer gate. The Kaname did not settle for a fence or a hedge; they built a second gatehouse with rooms of its own. The two gatehouses are best understood as a single device, planned to work together.

How It Works

The inner gate is 2 metres wide and hung with double-leaf board doors, a step down from the 2.7-metre formal gate in the front gatehouse. The gates shrink as one moves deeper into the estate.

The rooms on either side have distinct roles. The attendants' room to the north was presumably where the retinue of a visiting lord or guest waited, close at hand while their master went on to the Front Shoin. The storage room to the south served the household's everyday work.

The Kaname Family Residence Inner Nagayamon Gate is dated to the final decades of the Edo period, later than the front gatehouse. It may have been added to tidy up the circulation behind the older gate, but no document recording its construction has been published.

Visiting

The Kaname Family Residence Inner Nagayamon Gate is part of a private home and is not open to the public. Tucked behind the Front Nagayamon Gate, it cannot be seen from the street. No viewing events were announced as of September 25, 2026.
